Wedding Anniversary!

Today is my wedding anniversary!  We made it another year - year 11 to be exact!  Blending a family together has its challenges and it's not always easy, but because my hubby is one of the best people on the planet it does all work out.

Love you, sweetie!  Here's to many, many more years together!

Happy Memorial Day :)

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend - we owe so much to so many, and what better way to show our gratitude than to celebrate with friends and family.

I spend the weekend on Hilton Head Island with close friends and we enjoyed every minute of it.  Thank you to all who have served and are serving right now.  God Bless America!

My Family Gallery Wall

Hey I'm on a roll with blogging! Ha! actually posting once a week - woo hoo!  Today I just want to show you my gallery wall and how it's coming along.

A couple of years ago I put these two things on the wall in the family room with the intention of adding to it. Well, you know what they say about good intentions :)

Okay, so not bad, but definitely not very exciting either.  I finally started adding to the gallery.  I took some pictures from another spot in the house and moved them over here.. and also took two of hubby's pictures and gave them a bigger frame with a mat, and hung those up.  I bought one white frame and stuck it in there to hold the space. (sorry for the blurry pic)

Now we're on a roll.  This is definitely more interesting and fun.  I had the two bigger pictures of hubby and his kids and one picture of us all to go along with the individual head shots of the kids.  I needed to balance it out and add more of my kids.

About a week later I figured out which pictures to print and frame.  I had a frame I picked up from Ross for about $5, but I didn't like the way you had to hang it.  It had two small holder thingies on the back and I knew it would end up uneven and driving me crazy.  I took some floral wire, which is very easy to bend, and ran it between the two holder thingies so I would be able to hang it on one nail.

I adjusted the wire and twisted it around itself to the length where when I hung it the nail wouldn't show.  MUCH easier to hang now.

I knew I wanted the white frame to be gold, and hold a very special picture, so I spray painted the frame and added a picture of my daughter, her husband, and their sweet little angel.

I am very happy with they way it's coming together.  A lot of people have tutorials on putting together a gallery wall, and they make a lot of sense.  But, I'm an impatient person so I didn't measure anything, I didn't trace my frames on craft paper to make a mock-up wall, I just started hanging.  I'm not saying that's the best way to do it, that's just the way I did it.  Absolutely if you feel you need to plan it more then you should.  As long as you are happy with the results, I think the getting there can be whatever works best for you.. :)

The wall is plenty big enough to add more pictures, but I really like to let it grow naturally.  I do not plan on it being two more years before I add to it this time. I'll be back with an update when I do.

I have another small gallery that I showed here, when I talked about my black doors.  I love them and want one in my master bedroom next!  Do you have any gallery walls in your house? I would love to hear about them!

Kelli

Yep - I'm A Grandmother - Where Do I Begin?

Let me start by saying if you read this post you might need some tissues nearby....

It's been an exciting, weird, sad, and healing past two months. In late November I wrote about my fun lamp finds and their transformation - then I went to my company's annual meeting early December for 5 days, and that led me right up to my daughter's due date. Yep. I was gonna be a grandmother and I couldn't wait for the time to go by so we could get to Monday, December 16, 2013, the date she was scheduled to be induced.  I was so excited!!!

I woke up that morning and got going like any other day - took my 9th grader to school, dropped him off saying "Your brother will pick you up after school and bring you to the hospital!! See you later, Uncle Robbie!!"

When I arrived it took me no time to find their labor room.  Everything was going along smoothly. She had just received her epidural and was starting to feel better.  Nurses checking her all the time.  Baby heart rate perfect.  Mama's heart rate perfect.  All was perfect!  Her labor was progressing perfectly.

I stayed with them (hubby and her) on and off all day.  I went to the cafeteria and had lunch.  I greeted her friends and then eventually my boys as they arrived in the waiting area.  Then at some point I went back in the labor room.  It was around 6:15 PM.  She was pushing.  "Things are happening in here, she's pushing!" - I texted to her best friend waiting outside..  I was totally calm, sitting on the side of the labor room, well out of anyone's way, just observing.  Then, out of nowhere there were more nurses in the room.  The doctor was grabbing the ultra-sound thingy trying to see the baby.  Before I even knew what was going on she told a nurse to "get her to the OR, we're doing a C-section."  And they quickly wheeled her away.  Another nurse grabbed Adam (husband/daddy) and a blue paper jumpsuit and started running with him toward the OR.

At this point I still had no idea that there was anything wrong.  I went back to the waiting room and told everyone that the doctor was doing a c-section.  It just so happened that I knew one of the labor/delivery nurses that was working that day.  She was not one of the nurses attending to my daughter, and she happened by right at that time and she asked about her.  I told her she had been taken to the OR.  She offered to go in and check on things.  It was about 20 minutes later she came back out and that's when I knew something had gone wrong.  Bless her heart, she was fighting back tears!

She said "your daughter is fine, she's going to be okay"...  what about the baby?  what about Malcolm??  "he had a little difficulty - they are working on him now"  what difficulty? what happened?  is he going to be okay?? "Kelli I can't tell you what you want to hear, just know that you and your family are in my prayers" and she turned and almost ran away. Bless her heart - I still feel bad for her to this day!

What we came to find out later that evening is when the baby started coming, when it was time to be born and my daughter started pushing, some how the umbilical cord got between baby and mom and was pinched, and his only life support was cut off.  When they did deliver him by c-section he had a faint heartbeat, then nothing.  The nurses worked on him for 10 minutes to get his heart beating again, but he was not breathing on his own.

That evening and the next day my daughter and her husband received the worst news of their life.  Baby Malcolm would likely not survive.  They made the decision to make whatever time they had with him, whether it be two days, two weeks, or however long, to make that time beautiful and positive.

As a mother, the hardest thing to do is sit and watch your child in pain and know there's nothing you can do to stop it.  I didn't even know what to say!  I had never, ever been through this! What the hell - how did it happen? It's not fair, it's bullshit, it's crazy and stupid and it's not supposed to happen!  I asked everyone to pray for our little guy - to pray as hard as they could.  Miracles do happen, right?  We read about them all of the time.  We needed a miracle.  Right here. Right now. Pray people, just pray.  And I know that they were praying. I know they were.  But I think the damage to little Malcolm's brain had already taken him from us.

Late Tuesday evening they learned for certain that Malcolm would not survive.  The test showed there was little to no brain activity.  If they were to keep him on the ventilator he would never open his eyes, never move, speak, think or feel, let alone breathe on his own.  They knew they had to let him go.

In a note on Facebook to friends and family this is what my daughter wrote:

"Late on Wednesday night and into the early hours of Thursday morning we said our goodbyes. With the help of the NICU nurses, we changed Malcolm’s diaper and gave him a bath (the picture above was taken right after his bath). We held and rocked him, hugged and kissed him, told him how much we loved him and how much we would miss him. We stayed with him and held him as all of his wires and leads and tubes were removed and for a couple minutes, I saw my little boy’s face. Just his face – no tubes or wires or gauze. At 2:40am, our Malcolm was gone, though we realized over the course of that night and the following days that his spirit had likely moved on only minutes after he was born, and has been watching over us ever since."

Y'all, I've seen heartbreak in my life, but nothing prepares you for something like this. I honestly do not think I would have managed if not for my daughter and son-in-law, and their courage. They have set an example of love and grace that is hard to comprehend.  I wish I were a poet, that I could put into words what I have witnessed with them. I can't.  Suffice it to say that they are my heroes. (I can't even write this! I type a line, start crying and have to walk away. I come back, start writing again and immediately start crying again - okay. deeeeppp breath!)

He passed away on December 19, 2013, two and a half short days after he arrived, and we have been trying to cope with that. We had Christmas and New Years.  We keep waking up each day and going to sleep each night.  We are all affected by this, each in our own way, but obviously no one more than my daughter and her husband.

Some things just don't seem that important to me anymore.  Like home improvement projects, thrifting, and blogging.  I'm trying to get back in the swing of things - I painted a couple more doors in my house and moved some pictures around to make a new gallery wall - but I think I'm not going to pressure myself.  I'm still working through some stuff.   I am going to attend a blogger's get together this weekend and I'm hoping it will crank up the desire to do some things in my house again.  If anything it will just be good to be around all those talented people (maybe some of it will rub off on me).

I know this has been a long one - and if you're still with me I appreciate it!  No matter what, I still became a grandmother on Dec. 16, 2013, and that will never change!  I love it and look forward to having more grandkids for the rest of my life - and my daughter is looking forward to that too. :o)

Peace, love, and joy be with you all, now and always.

Love,
Kelli

Crafty Purdy Fun

You may have noticed, I'm NOT a super crafty person.  I mean, I can sew a straight line and paint some stuff, but I'm not what I would call "creative."  [Now, I was just schooled on saying "I'm not creative" by the wonderfully funny/talented/creative/smart Mandi over at Vintage Revivals, so I will say this once, and only once, now never to be uttered again] But recently I saw something on Pinterest and I thought I could do it!

(not sure about photo credit here - when you click on the pic on Pinterest it takes you to this blog, but I couldn't find this exact picture on the blog..?)

My sweet step-daughter, Chelsea, has lots of fun jewelry (and other stuff!), but just had it everywhere on her dresser. Yes, this is her actual dresser, this is not a reenactment.

She needed a place to hang her dangley earrings and necklaces!  I've been wanting to do this project for a while but had not run across the right frame. A couple of weeks ago my sweet Hubby went with me to the flea markets (we HAD to get out of the house!  It's been raining and raining, seriously, like, every weekend here in the ATL - I was going berrzerk!!) and he found this frame...

Perfect!  At first I thought I would use some fabric that I had left over from another project, but I realized that the fabric weave might be too tight and make it hard to put the earrings through.  So I went to Jo-Ann Fabric and got a yard of brownish tan burlap - and I have TONs of it left over.  I also got some quilt batting (that was on sale) to go behind the burlap.  Well, the batting was white and it showed through too much.  Humph. So I sprayed it gold.  Yes, I said that - I spray painted the batting gold.

So, here's how it went down - pretty simple really - Hubby measured the inside of the opening of the frame and cut a piece of thin plywood (that he had sitting around in the garage) to fit inside the opening - not real tight though, he left a little wiggle room.  Then I used that as a pattern and cut the batting the same size.

This is the kind I bought.  It was on sale and apparently you can iron it to something...?  who knew?

Then, like I said, I didn't like the white batting (or fleece..?) to show through the burlap, so I painted it with some gold Rust-Oleum

Yeah, what evs..  Then I cut the burlap the right size, laid it on top of the batting, turned it over and started stapling

(I have the best helper, eh? and how about that lovely beach towel protecting the counter.. huh, huh?)  Then we crammed it in the back of the frame and Hubby took to stapling again!

This is when we realized we probably should have made some holes in the batting before we put the whole thing together.  We wanted to attach a couple of drawer knobs and we would have to be very careful not to mess up the batting and the burlap.  We measured where we wanted the knob and cut a teeny tiny bit into the burlap and he drilled through the batting to the back of the wood.  The batting started twisting around the drill bit and he would have to stop and back it out.  We did this very slowly until we made it all the way through.

For the second knob we measured and drilled on the back and pushed the screw through.  It turned out exactly like I had pictured it!

Cost-wise it was a good deal:
Frame: $12
Batting: $5 (and I have tons left over for more projects)
Burlap: $4 (again, have left over for more projects)
Plywood, spray paint, and brass knobs we already had on hand
Total cost: around $20
Not bad...not bad at all... (pats self on back)

She really likes it and it was a fun little project to do with my Hubby.  Now I want to make one for Amanda and Rachael and even one for me!  Just gotta keep an eye out for some pretty frames!

Two weeks til the Haven Conference here in Atlanta - I'm really looking forward to it!

Rachael's Room

The bedroom that I talked about in my last post (which, by the way, was posted back in APRIL for gosh sake!!  I'm a horrible, horrible blogger!!) is coming along nicely - all thanks to my hubs!  But if I wait to post about it until it's completely finished I'm afraid it will never happen!

My hubby is man who likes to keep moving - he always has a To-Do list going in his head. So when he said he was ready to paint this room I was so excited!  He also enlisted Wesley's help, and that made the job go a lot quicker!  Wes helped fill in all the holes from the push-pins holding many, many band posters -

Ken painted the ceiling, baseboards, and trim, then did the cutting in at the ceiling and did most of the painting. We're using Sherwin Williams' "Mindful Gray" and we love it!  (He also cleaned the blinds and moved the furniture where I wanted it!  He's so awesome!!)

Lucy came in to visit too :o)

Lots of holes filled, eh?

We are so please with the color - sorry this picture is kind of dark, I took it late in the day.

When I finish my buffet (which I haven't worked on in several weeks because of either bad weather or too much to do on the weekend) I will move it to my dining room and move this chest (below), which belonged to hubby's Buby (gramma), into the bedroom to hold the TV/DVR.  We only have that big ol' TV (above), but it'll work for now for just watching movies :)

So here's what the room looks like with the frame set up, waiting on the mattress - again, the pic is kind of darkk..

I already have some cute pillows for the daybed, but need to find sheets and a thin quilted comforter that I can tuck in all around.  I have a Pinterest board for inspiration here, if you want to take a look.

The summer is flying by!  I feel like nothing is getting done around here - with all the rain we are having on the weekends we don't even get to spend any time at the pool.  Hopefully things will "dry up" soon and we'll get more things done and more fun will be had, especially with the 4th this week!  Hope you have a great holiday!

All Around Updates

ARg!  I'm so bad about writing blog posts..  I love blogging, but most days I just don't have the time/energy to sit down and write..  I have stuff running through my head all the time that I want to say.  If I would just be disciplined to sit and write.  It's kind of like getting pedicures for me..I want to get them (need to get them) but I seldom take the time. Weird analogy? Probs.

So I just wanted to share a few things that have been happening around here this month~~

A couple of weeks ago I found this little guy and brought him home for my dining room

I guess you would call it a buffet?  There are shelves behind the doors so it's really not a dresser, it must be a buffet - so anyway, we sooo did not like the paint job on it and right away went to Lowe's and bought all the tools we needed to strip it!

Well, we got more than we bargained for - a full post to come.  We are still working on that thing!

If you follow me on Instagram you may have seen some of the other activities we've had going on - Robbie's guitar class had their Spring Concert, and of course he was awesome.

And we prepared a Passover seder on the first night of Passover..

I don't think it's suppose to be a joyous occasion, but we always have fun with the kids, singing silly songs and each person reciting part of the service.  This year we were missing three of our kids due to travels and being away at college, so that part was a bummer - but that's what happens when you have grown kids!

Today I'm going to get back to working on stripping the buffet.  I also have another small table project that I can actually complete this weekend..  more Rub n' Buff involved!  It is going to be a gorgeous day in Georgia!  What do you have going on this weekend?  Or month?  If you're anything like me things do tend to be month-long projects - have a great one!

Mother of the Bride

I seriously do not know where the time has gone.  The last three months have flown, and I have not blogged at all about the most important event of 2012!  My sweet daughter, Amanda, married her perfect match, Adam, on October 13, 2012, and since then everything is a blurrrrr...

First of all, Amanda did all the planning for her wedding.  She found the venue, the caterer, the dress(es), everything, all on her own.  She made the decorations for the reception, all of the table numbers, and she even made the little gifts for everyone to take with them.  Amazing!  She did it all with some help from her best friends.  Me?  I didn't do a thing!  I just showed up!  Well, I did bring some pedestal cake plates with me... haha

We had a quick rehearsal the evening before and went to have dinner at a fun place right around the corner from the venue called The Bookhouse Pub.  It was so much fun seeing her with all her friends, seeing Adam with his family and friends..  We enjoyed a yummy meal and got to know some new folks.  It was great!

The next day we all arrived at the venue and started decorating, putting centerpieces together, placing chairs, etc.  Everyone played a part in the set up and it went very quickly.  We were at The Highland Inn in Atlanta.  It's a very old hotel with a center courtyard.

The ceremony took place in the courtyard, then everyone came inside to the "ballroom" for the reception.  While the bar opened for the guests, Amanda and Adam ran off with the photographer (and friend of mine, Paige Knudsen, from Simple Thoughts) for some "in-town" shots..  they turned out spectacular!  Here are a couple of them~

Once the pictures were taken we partied the night away!  I had THE best time dancing with my kids!  The entire night went by too fast.  It was truly very special.

It was crazy fun.  The best part was that Amanda and Adam were awesome hosts. Of course I love them both and wish them all the happiness in the universe!

Now, to get on with this new year and hopefully be better about keeping up with my blog.  I started painting doors in my house.  (woo so exciting, right? - well, maybe to some...)  More on that later.

Love,

Kelli
